The Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, founded in 1890, is the astronomy and astrophysics research unit of the Smithsonian Institution. Our programs reflect the Smithsonian's mission to increase and diffuse knowledge. We study the Universe and its many components through basic research, the development of innovative technologies and the support of future research scientists; and we advance public understanding of science - particularly through astronomy programs for schoolchildren, educators and all people with an interest in astronomy.
Gifts from individuals, corporations and private foundations provide critical funds for both
beginning and advanced research projects. For more information on giving to the
Observatory, please contact the
Advancement and External Affairs Office.
